Jewellery looted from temple : Who will protect the temples ?

In 24th May 09 Hindustan Times, there has been the news "Jewellery looted from temple" from a Jehangirpuri temple. The headline has appeared in a very insignificant manner, not consistent with the seriousness of crime. Who is going to protect the temples of our country ? Will the thief, if caught, be punished only for stealing as if he has stolen the jewellery from some household, or, would he be punished severely for having blasphemed the deities in the temple ? If there is anyone who knows re the laws that protect the places of worship against blasphemy, please do enter let us know in the comments. I am sure that if an act of blasphemy happens in the mosque or church, there is lot of hue and cry and the perpetrator would be severely punished. Like, when the church was blasphemed by so called Hindu extremists (for actively pursuing conversions), there were pictures in the newspapers, coverage was there on TV, and govt was after the so called Hindu extremists. Now, when the deities of a temple have been looted, we just get an insignificant news item.

I want to know, what is Govt of India doing to protect our temples ? and, what are Hindus doing to protect themselves ? If the thieves fo this temple are caught, what will be the punishment meted out to them ? I demand at least life imprisonment for them.

Blasphemy of any sort in any place of worship should be severely punished.
